Since we wrote letters to ourselves citing our hopes, dreams, and thoughts for the future, we then began telling our own personal stories. Thus, these letters then lent themselves to setting up the foundation for the use of Tree Maps to identify four notable life events. Each student then had to then include three bullet points regarding each life event. Whatever was not completed in class was finished for homework in preparation for Monday’s lesson.

On Monday, the students took these Tree Maps and chose one notable life event. They then brainstormed upon this event, going beyond the initial three bullet points. This will be the foundation upon which they will create their personal narratives throughout class this week. These narratives will serve as a baseline writing upon which each student’s writing goals can be identified.
