Today my students won an all-expenses paid trip to Bali…but then there was a slight malfunction. While my students were all safe, they had to decide which 5 of the following 10 celebrities would be allowed on the last life raft to a deserted island: Chris Brown, Hillary Clinton, Condi Rice, Iggy Azalea, Malala Youfsazi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Oprah, Bill Gates, Serena Williams, or Steve Harvey.
While they all thought Oprah was needed to maintain peace in the raft (and possibly give everyone some money once rescued), this activity helped the students see the importance of every role in group work. The students commented on the need for equal participation, respect for differing ideas, and whether we can ever value three life of one over that of another. All-in-all, Willipedia Airlines flight 3022 was a success thanks to this lovely idea from the book Teach Like A Pirate by by Dave Burgess.
